To my complete surprise and delight, I have been nominated for a Lezzy. The Lesbian Lifestyle gives these awards out every year to blogs which are written by, or contributed to by, lesbians. As completely and wonderfully awesome as this is, I have to say that, sadly, I do not identify as lesbian. It’s true, at the moment I am most definitely and passionately involved with the most incredible woman I have ever met in my life…but, in general, my identity and desires haven’t been bound by gender. To be quite honest, my sex life is actually rather limited right now – brief 3-day bursts of ecstatic activity with a person whose gender flows from female to male and everywhere in between, surrounded by weeks of what I suppose could be considered lesbianism – if making love to myself counts as such, being female and all – so for the moment I am effectively lesbian, even if my past has been a lot more muddled. Despite the untidiness of my orientation, I am still quite proud to be able to say that I qualify as a gold star bisexual – I’ve never had sex with anyone who wasn’t human (well, except for that one time with my pup, and he was still technically a person, regardless of how much he kept barking…)
However, there are a number of bloggers who do identify as lesbian and write really great blogs, and I encourage you to go nominate them. If you don’t already have favorites, here are a few to get you started:
Butchtastic – I’m a bit biased, but I think his is the best
Just Like Jesse James – A really cool person and a thoughtful, funny blog
Grumpy Granny – She blogs on her life, her love, her beloved garden and her family and manages to always lift the mundane to the sublime
Tina-cious – Fierce and vulnerable at the same time, she blogs about everything from family to her partner’s transition.
She Called Me Superman – A blog I’ve just started reading which is full of beautiful writing and wonderful insight.
Green-Eyed Girl – One of the sweetest people on the planet
Packing Vocals – Deeply insightful discussions of gender and identity
Essin Em – An excellent blog on sex and relationships
Alpha-femme – Unabashedly femme and beautiful
Unfortunately, the site didn’t consider the possibility of needing a button that says, “thank you for the nomination, but I’m not ready to commit to lesbianism, even though it seems like a really strong possibility for the future,” so I’ll use one of the buttons they provided because it’s pretty:
The rules state that you may vote once every 24 hours for your favorite blog in each of 11 categories until nominations close on February 22. After that, the top three nominations in each category will be chosen and voting will begin.
I want to offer a big warm wonderful thank you to the person or people who nominated me. As someone who’s always felt left out of just about every secret club in the universe, it’s pretty damn cool to be offered an invitation inside, even if it’s just to visit.

You’re beautiful, you know that? I think it’s awesome that someone wants to recognize your contributions to Lesbianism, I know I enjoy those contributions very much
However, you’ve got an identity and situation more complex than one that can fit neatly into a single label and I think you’ve done your best to communicate that. One thing I appreciate very much about you is that you understand about complex identity.
Thank you for your love, thank you for your honesty and support. No matter what label you choose, the open and honest way you tell your story is inspiring to a lot of people and I love that you get recognition for making your contribution to the community of readers who’ve adopted you as one of their peeps.
“a gold star bisexual”
<3 !!!
And I think in the spirit of the Lezzies, whether you're a "lesbian" or not (hell, I don't even identify as a lesbian, I'm just queer as fuck), your nomination is very sound indeed. Not to mention quite well-deserved.
I’ve decided to give out my own awards and I’m nominating you for my Top Hot Math Teaching Sex Blogger… I’ll present the award in person
That just makes me want to hug you again.
Thank you.
Seriously though, if there was an award for best huggers ever, I’d fight really hard for you to win. That was one of the warmest and most sincere welcomes I’ve ever had. You’re a special one.
Hey, thanks a lot for the shout-out!
